The Hong Kong Society of Digestive Endoscopy (HKSDE) was established in 1984 by Drs. Chao Sai-chik William, Cheng Chi-yan Frank, Leung Wing-cheong Joseph, and Chung Sheung-chee Sydney. The Society’s mission is to promote education, training, and the advancement of endoscopy in Hong Kong and the Asia Pacific region. Prior to the founding of HKSDE, Dr. Frank Cheng had already distinguished himself as the first medical professional from Hong Kong to serve as a Councilor on the board of the Asian-Pacific Society for Digestive Endoscopy (A-PSDE).
Over the past several decades, technological advancements and innovative breakthroughs have led to significant achievements in both diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy. As a leading regional society, HKSDE is dedicated to delivering high-quality training programs in both basic and advanced endoscopic techniques. In December 1985, HKSDE hosted its inaugural International Workshop on Therapeutic Endoscopy, featuring live demonstrations. This pioneering event received an enthusiastic response and has been held annually since 1987. Each year, the workshop attracts over 600 delegates from more than 20 countries / regions, offering a comprehensive three-day programme that includes didactic lectures, live demonstrations of over 50 endoscopic techniques, and pathology sessions. Since 2009, the workshop has also incorporated a half-day pre-congress programme focused on the training of endoscopy nurses.
HKSDE has played a vital role in the development of endoscopy in China. Under Dr. Chao’s leadership, the Society collaborated with the Chinese Society of Digestive Endoscopy (CSDE) to conduct several Chinese Therapeutic Endoscopy workshops in the 1990s. Following Hong Kong’s reunification with China, there has been a growing demand for collaborative educational initiatives, particularly in ERCP for the treatment of hepatobiliary diseases. One of HKSDE’s significant initiatives has been the organization of hands-on endoscopy and ERCP training courses in the mainland, successfully training over 450 endoscopists through the expertise of professionals from both Hong Kong and China.
